Davidson JR, Morrison RM, Shore J, et al. Homeopathic treatment of depression and anxiety. Alternative Therapies in Health and Medicine. 1997; 3(1):46-9.
Individually selected homeopathic remedies were used on an outpatient basis to treat 12 adults who had major depression, social phobia, or panic disorder. Duration of treatment was 7 to 80 weeks. Overall response rates were 58% on the clinical global improvement scale and 50% on the Brief Social Phobia Scale. Homeopathy may be useful in the treatment of affective and anxiety disorders in patients with mildly to severely symptomatic conditions.
Kleijnen J, Knipschild P, ter Riet G. Clinical Trials of Homeopathy. British Medical Journal. 1991;302:316-323.
The results of this meta-analysis showed a positive trend regardless of the quality of the trial or the variety of homeopathy used. Overall, of the 105 trials with interpretable results, 81 trials indicated positive results whereas in 24 trials no positive effects of homoeopathy were found. More high quality research is needed.
Pilkington K, Kirkwood G, Rampes H, et al. Homeopathy for depression: a systematic review of the research evidence. Homeopathy: the Journal of the Faculty of Homeopathy. 2005; 94(3):153-63.
The research evidence on homeopathy for the treatment of depression was compiled in this systematic review. Only two randomized controlled trials were identified. Several uncontrolled and observational studies reported positive results including high levels of patient satisfaction, but because of the lack of a control group, it is difficult to assess the extent to which any response is due to specific effects of homeopathy. Further research with well-designed controlled studies and sufficient numbers of participants is needed. The highly individualized nature of much homeopathic treatment may require innovative methods of analysis of individual treatment response.
Sevar R. Audit of outcome in 455 consecutive patients treated with homeopathic medicines. Homeopathy. 2005;94(4):215-21.
In an audit of clinical outcome in 455 consecutive patients (1100 consultations) using homeopathic treatment for a chronic illness, 304 patients (66.8%) benefited from homeopathy. One hundred and forty-eight patients (32.5%) were able to stop or substantially reduce their use of conventional drugs. The 10 most frequent clinical conditions treated were eczema, anxiety, depression, osteoarthritis, asthma, back pain, chronic cough, chronic fatigue, headaches and essential hypertension. Patients who had these common conditions constituted 43% of the total, and 151 of them (77%) were improved.
