Acupuncturists must use pre-sterilized, individually packaged, disposable needles. Many people feel no pain or minimal discomfort as needles are inserted. One might feel a brief, electrical pulsing sensation (de qi) when the needle hones in (makes contact with a specific point). There are minimal risks of tenderness at a particular point or temporary symptom exacerbation following treatment. Rarely a needle will nick a capillary, producing minor bleeding, bruising, or hematomas at the site of insertion.
