Hypnosis is a state of focused attention and mental absorption which increases receptivity to therapeutic suggestion. Hypnosis is a specific techinique used to treat medical as well as psychological disorders. When used in the context of psychotherapy, hypnosis is called hypnotherapy. The state we attribute to hypnosis occurs naturally and frequently in many interesting and engrossing activities, such as reading or watching films.  Some psychologists believe that hypnosis is simply a response to suggestion.  Others emphasize that is involves a state of dissociation.
